The History of the Turkey Run: From a Simple Idea to a Legendary Event

Car enthusiasts and classic automobile lovers from all over the country know that the Daytona Turkey Run is the place to be. This event, which takes place every year at the Daytona International Speedway, is the largest classic car show and swap meet in the USA. But how did it all begin? Let’s take a ride back in time to see how the Turkey Run became a must-attend tradition.

The Beginning: A Father, A Son, and a Dream

The Turkey Run was born out of a simple yet powerful idea—a place where all car lovers were welcome. It all started in November 1973 when Stu Sarjeant and his four-year-old son, Jim, attempted to enter their 1923 Ford T-Bucket Hot Rod with a 289 Ford V-8 into the Ormond Beach Gaslight Parade. Unfortunately, they were turned away because modified cars, like Hot Rods, were not allowed.

Jim, heartbroken, began to cry and asked his dad if they could have their own parade next year. That question sparked an idea that would turn into something much bigger than either of them could have imagined. The following year, in 1974, the first Turkey Run took place, featuring just 45 cars in the parking lot of the Howard Johnson hotel across from Bellair Plaza.

From Humble Beginnings to National Recognition

The Turkey Run quickly gained traction. By 1976, the newly formed Daytona Beach Street Rods club, with only five members at the time, helped expand the event. The event moved across the street to Bellair Plaza, where participation doubled, live bluegrass music was added, and even charity raffles became a tradition.

By 1982, the event had outgrown its space again, leading to a move to Seabreeze High School. This was a turning point, as a swap meet was added, attracting even more car enthusiasts. By 1987, the event had grown to over 900 cars and needed an even larger venue. The Daytona Beach Airport became its new home—an ideal setting with ample space to accommodate the booming popularity of the event.

However, after just two years at the airport, it was time to move again. By 1989, thanks to a partnership with the Daytona Beach Racing and Recreational Facilities District, the Turkey Run found its permanent home at the infield of the Daytona International Speedway—a move that solidified its reputation as a premier car show.

The Growth of a Tradition: The Birth of the Spring Turkey Run

By 1990, the Turkey Run was bigger than ever, and organizers decided to launch a Spring Daytona Turkey Run to keep the momentum going. The spring event welcomed over 800 cars in its first year and continued to grow each year thereafter.

Fast forward to today, and the Turkey Run now hosts nearly 7,000 vintage, classic, muscle, racecars, and trucks in the fall, with over 2,000 vehicles participating in the spring event.

It also features:

  • A massive swap meet with rare and hard-to-find auto parts
  • Car corral for buying and selling classic vehicles
  • Live entertainment
  • Celebrity appearances from the car world
  • Thousands of spectators who come to admire the beautiful automobiles
